What is Shiatsu?

SHIATSU IN KNARESBOROUGH

Zen - Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on holistic Japanese Body therapy based on the same underlying philosophy and principles as TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).  Shiatsu means “Finger-Pressure” - a treatment incorporating gentle manipulations, stretches and pressure exerted using fingers, thumbs and palms to various points on the body’s energy channels (Meridians).  The aim is to promote the body ‘s vital energy (known as Ki) and relaxation of body and mind which are seen as  the key to a healthy life.

Shiatsu is not a static treatment.

Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and can help in a wide range of conditions – from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. Shiatsu on a regular basis can help to stop the build-up of stress and maintain the body’s fight against the imbalances which cause disease. Each treatment is different and designed to be appropriate for each person on the day.

A Shiatsu session can also be combined with Central Channel Work or parts of the Myofascial technique which all flow together. A Multi Session is also possible, combining a Shiatsu treatment and a Myofascial Release treatment, each of one hour for chronic or acute cases.

For Shiatsu, Central Channel Work and Myofascial Release you remain fully clothed and usually lie on a futon on the floor. If lying on the futon is not comfortable, it is possible to receive the treatment on a massage bed, or sitting in a chair.

Who can benefit from Shiatsu?

Most people, ill or healthy, and of all ages from babies to the elderly. Shiatsu is extremely useful in enhancing health and vitality and many people use it as part of stress management or preventive health care programme.

Most conditions respond well to Shiatsu ranging from acute to the more chronic. It is more how the individual person responds  as a whole that is of relevance, rather than simply the specific condition, that is worked.
